Al-Awda San Diego is pleased to announce that Khayria Zubaidi will be our guest speaker 7 PM on Saturday October 2, 2010 at Al-Awda Center, 2734 Loker Avenue West Suite K, Carlsbad CA 92010. The title of her presentation will be "Empowering Palestinian Refugee Children"
This event is free and open to all.
Khayria Zubaidi has been working in the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp in Syria from 2004. Since 2006, she was Al-Awda's primary contact and on the ground organizer when Al-Awda was raising and providing funds, clothes, drawing media and public attention etc. to Palestinian families who were stranded in the Tanaf desert camp (located in no-mans land on the border between Syria and Iraq). Her work, which was done through the two organizations she founded Al-Hawiyah and later Al-Bayader Center, will be referred to in her presentation on Saturday, October 2nd. She will also focus on her more recent work with Palestinian children at Al-Bayader Center and suggest ways for Al-Awda and other supporters to be involved. Khayria plans to show a recent film made by the children at Al-Badayer Center as part of her presentation. The film "The Road to Gaza is Open" was made by the children to show their solidarity with the Gaza Freedom Flotilla. The 8 minute film took one week to produce, and it was the Byader's youth group third short film. The earlier films were "A Salute to Naji Al-Ali", and the second was "I. Him. You." Al-Bayader's media center's very first film was about Al-Tanaf camp to document the suffering of the refugees. The basic film-making resources for these films were obtained via a grant from Al-Awda USA. One of Al-Bayader Center's main objectives today is to train the next generation of film makers in order to increase awareness and understanding about the plight of Palestinian refugees.
Khayria Zubaidi received a degree in Arabic literature from the Arab University in Beirut, and took courses in journalism at the University of Kuwait. She worked with Al-Watan and other newspapers in Kuwait as well as Kuwait Television. She later moved to Damascus where she continued her work with Kuwaiti newspapers. She has been active with the Union of Palestinian Women (Itihad Al-Mara'a Al-Falesteenia) in Kuwait and Damascus. Her work now focuses on training and empowering the new generation of Palestinian children through Al-Bayader Center which she founded.
